OUR STORY...
OUR 5 CORE COMPANY BELIEFS
Sweet Dreams MicroHomes is focused on developing construction-related jobs in a factory setting. With its primary focus on economic development and apprentice education in construction skills, the Board of Directors at Sweet Dreams MicroHomes focused on five key beliefs to support their employees skill development and personal economic. They are:

1) TRANSITIONAL HOME: Our company will provide a temporary home as a condition of employment if an individual is homeless or relocating to the area. Our goal is to provide initial stability while they transition to a home or apartment of their choice at their earliest convenience.

2) JOB TRAINING: Partnering with diverse organizations, including the Vermont Department of Corrections and local high school career centers, Sweet Dreams MicroHomes will provide company-based apprentice programming and training in construction skills and office-related business applications.

3) LIFE TRAINING: A life of stability requires more than a weekly paycheck. That’s why Sweet Dreams MicroHomes will provide monthly access to community experts advising employees on life skills, such as opening a bank account, investing and saving programs, and acquiring a dependable vehicle.

4) PERSONAL SUPPORT: Sometimes life happens and we all hit a speed bump that often requires a moment of compassion, a shoulder to lean on, or simply some small financial assistance. Sweet Dreams MicroHomes will provide company support, encouragement, and help as employees work through their personal and financial challenges.

5) BUYING YOUR PERSONAL HOME: Transitioning employees into a permanent home that creates personal wealth is Sweet Dreams MicroHomes ultimate achievement. Creating an environment where an employee can acquire a permanent home helps eliminate generational poverty, improves mental health and wellness, and is something every person deserves during their lifetime.
WHAT KICKSTARTED THIS EFFORT?
In 2004, Ethan Allen Furniture closed its plant located in Island Pond, Vermont displacing over 200 workers from good factory paying jobs. Within the next two years, the Gilman Paper Plant in Gilman, Vermont and the paper manufacturing plants located in Groveton, New Hampshire all closed suddenly due to economic pressures in the paper industry. These closures placed over 700 people out of work in regions of northern Vermont and New Hampshire. The impact rippled through the region and was felt strongly by local governments with the loss of property taxes, income taxes and sales taxes from these closures. The impact reverberated throughout the local communities impacting supporting businesses in logging, forestry, and trucking while local stores and restaurants closed and real estate prices declined due to a saturation of available homes listed by local real estate firms.
Our founder, Jim Davis, began working on the idea of creating a manufacturing business in 2009 that would support the forest, logging and trucking industries. The idea of developing a modular housing manufacturing facility was born. Unfortunately, the real estate market had an adequate supply of homes available in the region and the concept was placed on hold for the next 10 years.
Fast forward to 2020. The onset of COVID related restrictions coupled with fast rising real estate prices placed an enormous need for affordable housing in the region. Jim Davis along with Rick Desrochers decided to do something about the housing issue. Simple Homes Manufacturing, a Vermont nonprofit company, was created and Sweet Dreams MicroHome modular houses designs were being finalized.
Our homes will be available to order by January 5, 2026 for Fall 2026 delivery.
OUR UNIQUE HOUSE DESIGN
The adage "to age in place" is a critical theme in our design process. We feel strongly that members of our community should be able to live in their community throughout their life in a home that meets their current family size and needs if they so choose.
A key design feature developed by the Sweet Dreams MicroHomes creative team is the ability of our tiny house to expand in size from a 336 square feet (Base Unit) to a 3 bedroom (1,100 square foot) house. Our expansion units ( known as "Suites") can be delivered and attached to the "Base Unit" in less than 2 hours. This ability of our home to expand during the lifetime of a family's life as their financial and family situation changes is a key element to our design.
The micro-home also can reduce its size as family members leave the family nest and set out to create their own life. The "Suite" unit can be detached from the house and repurposed into an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU), an airbnb rental, a mother-in-law micro-home or even an office on your property. These units are designed to be mobile and can be easily moved to a new location. Sweet Dreams MicroHomes will also "buyback" a "Suite" unit from the homeowner, refurbish it and repurpose it in the community for affordable housing.
